I am not Lion (lying)

March 7, 2025

It has been a loooooooong time since I last posted but that does not mean I have not been sewing. It actually means I have not taken time to take pictures and write about the things I have been sewing. I like sewing more than I like writing so sewing almost always wins if I have to pick one.

I am about to head out to teach a fun class of making a snap bag with a little thread painting and crooked line quilting. For anyone who has made a snap bag in the past you already know that the closure on this bag is done with the tape from a tape measure. When I first started making these I used to just go out to the garage and grab my husband’s tape measure and cut off a few lengths of the tape. Once the stop end of the tape it cut off the tape goes inside of the tape measure case and you never see it again. And then you hear “Honey have you seen my tape measure?”, just a quick note here – the answer to this question should always be “no, I have not seen it.” Otherwise a situation could arise.

Now I go to Harbor Freight or I should say he goes to Harbor Freight and buys me tape measures when they are on sale and he makes sure I always have a drawer full of my own tape measures. Enough about the tape measure disagreement that happened at my house.

This is the fabric I started with. I have had this wonderful fabric for some time and I don’t even remember why I bought it other than I just liked the way it looked.

I added a couple of other fabrics from my stash that I thought coordinated well and with rotary cutter in hand and sewing machine nearby, I started. First I did a little applique with the lion head and then thread painted so you couldn’t tell that it was appliqued on.

I really enjoy thread painting it almost feels theraputic, it just me an the hum of my machine. The textue and depth is gives the fabric always amazes me. It is just a lot of thread but now this guy looks cute enough to say ‘here kitty, kitty, I would like to pet you.

Add the interior and tab and of course the tape measure and the lion bag is done.

The fabric makes the back side almost as interesting as the front side but definitely not as dimensional.

With my bag ready and mind refreshed on how I make these bags I am off to teach others how they can make these fun bags.
